How to prevent noise-induced hearing loss

Noise-induced hearing loss (hearing loss) may occur after prolonged exposure to loud noise or sound in one breath. NIHL is one of the most common diseases related to work in the United States and affects millions of people between the ages of 20 and 69. With proper precautions, hearing loss can be avoided. Read on to learn how to prevent noise-induced hearing loss.

Instructions

Understanding the causes of hearing loss induced

1. Be aware that prolonged exposure to decibel levels above 85 can damage your hearing. Find common decibel levels by clicking on the “Thermometer noise” on the website of the Better Hearing Institute. See Resources below for a link.

2. Recognize that one exposure to a loud explosion or gunshot can cause immediate and permanent hearing loss.

3. Be aware that noise-induced hearing loss can develop so slowly that it evades detection for years.

Prevent noise-induced hearing loss

1. Prevent NIHL by avoiding long periods of unprotected exposure to the loudest sounds of 85 decibels. Avoid being near extremely loud, explosive sounds well. Learn more about the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders website. See Resources below for a link.

2. Use foam, silicone earplugs or ear protection to prevent damage when using noisy machinery, power tools or equipment for recreation. Use this protection when shooting weapons as well.

3. Turn down the volume on the headphones, televisions and car radios.

4. Be aware of the decibel level of household appliances and toys for children. Limit exposure to the elements with higher levels.

5. Be aware that activities such as rock concerts may have levels of 150 decibels, upmarket decibels.

6. Have your hearing tested annually by a certified audiologist if you’re in a profession that is at high risk for hearing loss due to noise. These occupations include those related to construction, firefighters, police, music and agriculture.
